As for the accuracy of the index and its effect on searching,

I think it is always important to remember that no index

can ever be 100% accurate. And that applies to online indexes,

other electronic indexes, and even to good old card indexes.

Some errors are transcription errors while others reflect

errors in the underlying data, but the point is that there

WILL be errors, so we should expect them and develop a strategy

to cope with them. And this is where online and other

electronic indexes come into their own because they are so

versatile and so fast.

I found several wanted entries using wildcard searches - and

even more searching on forename, age and birthplace only. I

also tried to imagine what letters might be mistaken for others

- for example, upper case M H W can be similar, as can lower

case r and v and lower case i and e.
