If I remember right, memories are a bit dim, it was at a party at Garry’s place. On the night John & partner who were in a Citron Goddess when a tipper truck ran over the car, we all thought no one could get out of that alive, but John & his partner emerged completely unscathed, the car panels just fell off in a heap.

Very sad to hear the news the other night.

RIP John.

Hello old climbing friends,

I’ve been trying to think of what to say and what to type for 3 days now and it’s still not clear to me.

In 1966 I first met John - just under 50 years ago, when we all slept in the bottom cave at Narrow Neck. I remember a club meeting at the old Railway Hotel opposite Central Railway Station where I helped to drill a hole in the kerb for a carrot bolt with bolt plate which was tied with a number 4 climbing rope rope, along with a primitive strain meter, to the back of some old car. John got in the car, took up the slack, and slowly drove away. We were all standing around drinking and laughing at the absurdity of the whole thing.

We were young and exuberant and learnt to love climbing and each other. That love still unites us.

Fizz, we met just a few times and I feel desperately sad. I’m sad for you and your family and my prayers are with you.

That love is our strength. It has kept me strong, and so in time, it will keep you strong.

John, I’ll miss you.

Love

Sadly (but fortunately) it is at occasions such as this that we recall the good times we had with the people

we once knew ...

I still clearly remember ….a weekend of climbing instruction at Narrowneck ….where I met JD for the first time. This was a turning point in my life, followed by an interest in caving, a season in NZ, then to the wilds of PNG, Myanmar …

John was a dynamic individual who focused his energy on the things and people that mattered to him. If he had an idea he would think it through. If he felt it workable he would approach it with an enthusiasm that infected those around him.

He will be sorely missed by those whose paths he crossed and whose lives he enriched. Warm regards,

Neil R

I was at College with John and afterwards and always admired John's commitment and willingness to take creative risks.

Cheers
